Study of Digital Artist One
Peter Grego

Introduction
-
I have chosen to study the photographer Peter Grego.
-
I have chosen them because I really like how he uses flags in his art, specifically his film 'Flagrant'.

Analysing 1 of their pieces of work:

-
The subject matter of the work to the left depicts Grego's son with flags of his countries painted on his face. The viewer's eye is drawn to him and all the different flags that he has painted on him.
-
Grego has paid particular attention to Compositional Rules in this work, as he has intentionally used Repetition as his son is repeated throughout the photograph and Contrast as the face paint stands out against his skin.
-
Grego has also used the Formal Element of Colour of the flags that are on his skin.
-
The effect of these visual devices is a more interesting and fun photo.

Mood:
-
I think the work feels calm but important. The artist has created this mood by using serious facial expressiosn, conveying that
-
The colours used in the work are contrasting yet vibrant and noticable.
-
The person is very relaxed and he has a very significant presence, his countenance and body language match the overall mood of the piece.

Technical analysis:

-
I think that this work was probably taken using harder lighting and a tripod. There aren't many props except for the face paint that he has on and the white/grey background behind him.
-
The artist has used studio lighting from in front of the subject. The light is not coloured and is just plain white light. The shadows are very soft and do not contrast very much with the subject.
-
I assume the video has been enhanced partially, at least with the brightness and contrast but I don't think it has been changed too much
-
In this work the camera has been focused on the model who has face paint of where he has come from.
-
The artist has used a medium aperture to create a medium Depth of Field. I can tell this because none of the picture is very blurred apart from a few sections of it.
-
This draws the eye to the model in the middle of the photo as he is the most colourful and important part of it.
-
It would have been best for them to use a big ISO like 600 to take this work because noise or grain would not be wanted and the video is fairly bright.

Intent:
-
Researching Grego's work, I have found that he makes his work because of his awareness of racism that POC experience in their day-to-day lives. He knows that POC are targeted on a daily basis and wants to try his best to combat that.

Relate to your own work:
-
In my work I will paint pride flags on my friends faces to try and get the point across that queer people are completely harmless and to get people to recognise that the LGBTQ+ is targeted unnecessarily in a world where we need to start being kinder to each other.
