Artist Statement
My portfolio project explores the broad theme of Home. Within this theme I have chosen to focus on pride within LGBTQ+ people. You can see this through my use of flags, messages and colour.
I have been influenced by the artists: Peter Grego, Sophie Calle and Nick Fancher. Grego has inspired my use of face painting the pride flags onto my models and smudging this in films. Calle has inspired my use of projections and you can see this by the way I have projected messages onto my models. Fancher has inspired my use of colour and light and you can see this by the way I have used the colour of flags around my models.
My development work depicts my artists being put together and added to. I decided to delve into some film and combine multiple artists into one development. In development 1, I decided to make a film of my friend smearing face paint, to develop the work that had previously been just photos. I was happy with the way it came out and the smudging looked super cool, but I felt that I didn’t have enough footage so I decided that in the next film, I would make sure to gather as much as possible.
In development 2 I took photos of my brother with projection coming at him with lights that were the colour of his flag (the bisexual one). I was super happy with this and I think the editing came out really cool. This was probably my favourite of the developments and I think my brother did a really good job of modelling!
In development 3, I made another film that combined face paint with projections. I thought this one was also really cool and I learnt from my previous mistake of not taking enough footage as this time I took plenty. I was happy with the way I was able to tell my model what to do but I think I took quite a while taking the footage and would’ve had more time to edit if I had been quicker.
In my final piece, I took a film that combined all the elements (paint, projections and colour). I was happy with the short time it took me to take the footage, but the camera was a bit wonky so the film is not my favourite. Because of this, I decided to use photos that I already had and edit those so I had a backup too.
