Study of Digital Artist three

Nick Fancher

Introduction

  • I have chosen to study the photographer Nick Fancher.

  • I have chosen him because I really like how he uses very cool lighting in his photos that set the mood.

Analysing 1 of their pieces of work:

  • The subject matter of the work to the right depicts a woman posing in front of a very bright background. The viewers eye is led to her face.

  • Fancher has paid particular attention to Compositional Rules in this work, as they have intentionally used central eye dominant as the model's eye is in the middle of the image and contrast between subject and background because her clothes are very dark and she is very shadowed but the background is very bright orange.

  • Fancher has also used the Formal Elements of tone or light as there is a very strong contrast and also negative space as there is empty orange space behind the model.

  • The effect of these visual devices is a very cool and futuristic kind of feel to the image.

Mood:

  • I think the work feels striking and serious. The artist has created this mood by having the model wear a serious face and used dark moody lighting.

  • The colours used in the work are very bright and they compliment each other very well since orange and blue are opposite each other on the colour wheel.

  • The person is giving off a very serious and calm vibe through her body language and expression which somewhat juxtapose the bright colours around her.

Technical analysis:

  • I think that this work was probably taken using a tripod and lighting with a coloured gel over it for the blue coming across her face.

  • The artist has used studio lighting from the side of her face to create a dark shadow on the other side of it. I think he has chosen to use blue lighting in order to compliment the orange background. The lighting is hard light to create sharp shadows.

  • I think the work has been edited in photoshop, I think the background has been edited in and the contrast levels darkened.

  • In this work the camera has been focused on the model's face. Her hand at the front of the photo is out of focus.

  • The artist has used a big aperture to create a shallow Depth of Field. I can tell this because the hand at the front of the picture is unfocused but her face is in focus

  •  This draws the eye to the models face as it is in focus and right in the centre of the image.

  • I can tell that Fancher has also used a medium Shutter Speed because he wanted to reduce motion blur but still have some blurry sections.

  • It would have been best for them to use a small ISO like 200 to take this work because it is quite dark

Intent:

  • From looking at it, I think the work is about exploring the fun in using different colours.

  • Researching Fancher’s work, I have found that they made this work because he likes using very dramatic lighting to create a more interesting image.

Relate to your own work:

  • In my work I will use colourful lighting with the colours of a pride flag.
