Study of Digital Artist Two

Sophie Calle

Introduction

  • I have chosen to study the photographer Sophie Calle.

  • I have chosen her because I really like how she projects writing onto her model for her photos

Analysing 1 of their pieces of work:

  • The subject matter of the work to the right depicts the model with french writing projected onto her from the torso up. The models eyes are looking down past the camera to something the audience cannot see.

  • The work is in black and white creates a vintage sort of feel to the audience, but it is worth noting that some of her work is not in black and white, yet depicted in yellowish toned lighting.

  • Calle has paid particular attention to Compositional Rules in this work, as she has intentionally used contrast where her clothes and the projected writing contrast with her skin and the plain background. There is also repetition and pattern which is created by the projected writing.

  • Calle has also used the Formal Elements of Tone or Light since the picture is in black and white. There is also texture as her skin, the wall and her clothing all have different textures.

  • The effect of these visual devices is a very cool image that gives off quite serious and intimidating vibes.

Mood:

  • I think the work feels calm  and serious. The artist has created this mood by the model looking away from the camera, giving a wistful look and that it has been put into black and white.

  • There is a lack of colour due to it being monochrome which makes the photo feel like it is from a long time ago and also makes the photo feel more serious.

  • The person is standing very calmly and there is not much of an expression on her face, further adding to the calm, wistful mood of the photograph.

Technical analysis:

  • I think that this work was probably taken using a tripod with a ring light behind it to create shadows on her face.

  • The artist has used studio lighting for this piece with a yellow tint to it. She is lit from the front with hard lighting.

  • I think there have been some things added in photoshop like the black and white of the image and some changing of the brightness and contrast.

  • In this work the camera has been focused on the model and the writing on her. Most of it is clear except for some of the writing further away from the model.

  • The artist has used a medium aperture to create a medium Depth of Field. I can tell this because most of the image is in focus apart from one or two blurry points

  • This draws the viewer's eye to the model in the centre of the photograph as she is the most important part of the image.

  • I can tell that Calle has also used a medium Shutter Speed because... she wanted to have a clear photo.

  • It would have been best for them to use a big ISO like 1200 to take this work because it is very dark and it creates grain to make the image look more vintage.

Intent:

  • From looking at it, I think the work is about being vulnerable and open with yourself.

  • Researching Calle's work, I have found that she makes her work because she wants to highlight identity and intimacy on a more creative level.

Relate to your own work:

  • When I take my photos I will project an image to promote being kind both to yourself and to others
