Study of Digital Artist Two
Suzanne Saroff
Introduction
-
I have chosen to study the photographer Suzanne Saroff.
-
I have chosen them because I really like how they distort images of fruit and flowers using glasses of water and glass spheres.

Analysing 1 of their pieces of work:

-
The subject matter of the work to the right depicts (shows) colourful fruit that is magnified and distorted using glass. The viewer's eye is drawn to the banana behind the glass but they also focus on all the different shapes of the bananas in the glass
-
Any other information about the work that is important? Suzanne Saroff uses a colour scheme in her photos and she makes the background a similar colour to the subject of the photo.
-
Saroff has paid particular attention to Compositional Rules in this work, as they have intentionally used pattern in the layout of glasses, rule of thirds where she has intentionally placed the subject right in the centre of the photo and framing where she frames a section of the banana using glasses filled with water
-
Saroff has also used the Formal Elements of shape and form with the distorted shapes of the banana, negative space with the background of the photo completely empty and colour with colourful fruits.
-
The effect of these visual devices is calming for the viewer because of the way Saroff uses similar colours throughout her photo. Their eye is drawn to the centre where there is a lot happening with some fruit.

Mood:
-
I think the work feels calm. The artist has created this mood by using similar colours throughout the photo.
-
The colours used in the work are all similar with a yellow/orange colour scheme which is shown with the colour of the fruit and the colour of the background. This has an overall calm and relaxing effect.

Technical analysis:

-
I think that this work was probably taken using lighting stands and ring lights and maybe a tripod to make sure it isn't blurry from her hands shaking and its really focused. These make the work very bright and it stands out compared to any other photos the viewer might see.
-
The artist has used studio lighting lit from the right side as we can see the shadows under the glasses and under the fruit going to the left.
-
Do you think the work has been edited in Photoshop/Premier Pro? I think Saroff has edited her work in photoshop by enhancing the colours by changing the vibrance and saturation.
-
In this work the camera has been focused on the whole photo because its all in focus
-
The artist has used a big aperture to create a long Depth of Field. I can tell this because everything is in focus. Even though there isn't a focus point that is on one specific part of the photo the viewers eye is drawn to the biggest glass ball/cup because they can see the fruit clearer in a bigger one.
-
I can tell that Saroff has also used a fast Shutter Speed because everything in the photo is very sharp and in focus.
-
It would have been best for them to use a big ISO like 1000 to take this work because it's very bright.

Intent:
-
From looking at it, I think the work is about seeing things differently.
-
Researching Saroff’s work, I have found that they made this work because they want to find new ways of interpreting our reality.

Relate to your own work:
-
How will you be influenced by this artist’s work when planning and taking your own photos? What about their work are you going to try and replicate in your own? I will use some fruit and vegetables I will get some glasses and glass spheres and place them in front of the fruit in positions where I get interesting reflections and photograph them using a camera. Then I will go onto photoshop and enhance the colours and saturation of my photos to make them stand out more.
