Development Two

My Plan

Within my development I hope to...

1. combine influences from 2 of my chosen artists

2. make sure my work is about my theme

3. include my own research and ideas

For my first try at this is in Development 2, I will create a series of three edited photos in which I will combine Sebastian Magnani's Photography style with Suzanne Saroff's photography style. I will do this by switching the mirror from Sebastian Magnani's photos with a glass ball that Suzanne Saroff uses in her photos. This shows my theme because I will still be using edges and the shape of the edge will be the same however the effect it has will be different. Sebastian Magnani shows reflections in his photos whereas Suzanne Saroff uses distortion.

Taking my Photos

In this Photo I intend to use a camera, and natural lighting outside for the photo of the grass when i replicate Sebastian Magnani's photography, and a glass ball when i replicate Suzanne Saroff's photography.

I will need to take my photos outside with trees and grass in the background because that is what Sebastian Magnani takes photos of. I intend to use the compositional rules and formal elements of negative space and balance in the background photo and shape and form and framing in the top photo.

My Outcome

To edit my first photo I opened it in Adobe Photoshop and firstly I cropped the background photo so that there was less negative space. Then I chose which photo of the glass ball I wanted to use and I used the object selection tool to select the glass ball.  If there was any bits that were not selected, I used the magnetic lasso tool to include them. I then copied and pasted the ball onto the background photo and I adjusted the size and moved it so that it was directly in the middle of the photo. Then I used the eraser tool to clean up the edges and make sure they were smooth. Next I used the burn tool to create a shadow underneath the ball to make it look more realistic. Finally I adjusted the brightness and saturation of the photos to enhance the colours.

To edit my second photo I opened it in Adobe Photoshop and firstly I cropped the background photo so that there wasn't as much negative space, next I got the photo of the glass ball and I used the object selection tool to select the ball. As there were some bits that were not selected and extra bits that I didn't need, I used the magnetic lasso tool to add and take away selected areas. When I had selected the whole ball I copied and pasted it onto the background photo and I adjusted the size and made sure it was in the middle of the photo. After that I used the eraser tool to go around the edges and make them cleaner. Next I noticed there was a reflection of the sun in the ball that was really bright and I didn't want it so I used the clone stamp tool to copy an area near it and cover it up. Then I used the burn tool to create a shadow underneath the glass ball to make it look more realistic. Then I adjusted the brightness and the saturation to enhance the colours.

To edit my third photo, I opened the background photo in Adobe Photoshop and then opened the photo of the glass ball. I used the object selection tool to select the ball and used the magnetic lasso tool to add or remove any parts that it didn't pick up or any extra bits that I didn't need. Next I copied and pasted the ball onto the background photo and placed it directly in the middle. Then I cropped the photo to make it more rectangular instead of square. After that I used the eraser tool and went around the edges of the ball to tidy them up. Once the edges were smooth, o then found that there were some reflections of light on the glass that I didn't want so I used the clone stamp tool to copy another are near it and cover up the reflection. Then there was an area on the ball that was brighter than the rest because of a reflection so I used the dodge tool to make it darker and blend with the rest of the ball. After that I used the burn tool to create a shadow underneath to make it look more realistic. Then I noticed an area in the background with no grass so I used the clone stamp tool to copy another area of grass and cover it up. Finally I changed the brightness and saturation to enhance the colours in the photo.

Review

How has it gone?

I think that my composition is effective because because I have used the compositional techniques of rule of thirds as i placed the glass sphere directly in the centre of the photo, framing as the edges of the glass sphere frame the image inside it, contrast between the upside down image inside the glass ball and the background, lines as the edges of the ball, negative space in the background of the photo and balance as the sides are balanced. This emphasises my theme of edges

What are you pleased about?

I have successfully edited in photoshop by using different tools such as the object selection tool, the clone stamp tool, the burn tool and the eraser tool. I have also successfully shown my theme of edges in the style of Sebastian Magnani and Suzanne Saroff.

In my next Development

To make my next development work even better I need to:

Keep doing: Using compositional techniques in my work because they make it look more professional.

Do less of: I think I may have made the third photo a bit too bright so I need to reduce the brightness

Do more of: I think my first photo is too dark so I think I need to brighten it more
