Development Three
My Plan
Within my development I hope to...
1. combine influences from each of my 3 chosen artists
2. make sure my work is about my theme
3. include my own research and ideas
My first try at this is in Development 3. I will create a series of edited photos where I will combine techniques from all three of my artists. I will use photos that I have already taken for previous developments and artist copies. I will use a photo I took for my Suzanne Saroff copy as the background photo and I will edit the ink from one of my Alberto Seveso artist copies into the glasses filled with water. I will then take one of the photos I used in development 2 and use the glass sphere that has a tree through it and edit it onto the glass sphere in the Suzanne Saroff photo. Alberto Seveso will be shown through the ink in the water, Suzanne Saroff will be shown through the background photo of the distorted fruit and Sebastian Magnani will be shown in the tree through the glass sphere.
Taking my Photos/Footage
In this Film shoot I intend to use three different photographs that i have taken. i will use studio lighting in a light box for the background photo. I will also use a box light to get the whole photo evenly lit to take the ink photos. For the photo of the tree through the glass sphere i intend to use natural lighting as i will go outside to take them.
I will need to bring in fruit and glasses for the Suzanne Saroff aspects of this development as those are objects that she photographs. I will also need some paint or ink that can be poured into a tank of water as I take photos. For the Sebastian Magnani's aspects, I will need to go outside with a glass sphere and take photos of trees through the glass.
I will need a DSLR camera, Glasses and fruit for Suzanne Saroff's photos. I will also need a water tank to pour the ink into for Alberto Seveso's photos
In the background photo I intend to use the compositional rules/ formal elements of framing, colour and shape and form. For the ink photos I will use the techniques of texture, shape and form and colour. For the photo with the sphere and the tree, I will use the techniques of fill the frame, framing and shape and form

My Outcome

To edit my first photo I opened it in Adobe Photoshop and firstly I opened my grapefruit photo that I took for my artist copy 2 to use as the main photo. Then I cropped the photo to get rid of some of the negative space in the photo. I then adjusted the brightness, contrast and saturation to enhance the colours of the photo and make it stand out more. Next I used the spot healing brush tool to get rid of any marks on the photo. Next I opened an ink photo that I had taken for my artist copy 3 in a separate tab. I then used the object selection tool to select the ink in that photo- I also used the magnetic lasso tool to add in any bits that weren't selected and take away any extra bits that weren't supposed to be selected. Next I moved the ink into the right position in the glass and then I changed the settings to soft light and made a copy of the layer. I did this so that the ink fit more in the photo as before, it looked too solid and didn't look like it was actually in the photo, but the soft light was too translucent and it needed another layer to make it look right. After that I used the eraser tool to go around the ink and erase anything that wasn't needed and to soften the edges so they blended with the photo more. Next I opened up a photo that I had taken for my development two and I used the object selection tool to select the glass sphere and paste it onto the other photo. Then I went around the edges of the ball with the eraser tool to make them smoother. Once the edges were smooth, I moved the ball to cover the glass ball that was already in the photo. To make to ball look like it was really in the photo, I decreased the opacity of that layer. Next I opened another photo that I had taken for my artist 3 copy and did the same thing as I did with the other ink photo and I put it in the other glass.
To edit my second photo, I opened it in Adobe Photoshop and firstly I opened my kiwi photo that I took for my artist copy 2 to use as the main photo. I then adjusted the brightness, contrast and saturation to enhance the colours of the photo and make it stand out more. Next I used the spot healing brush tool to get rid of any unwanted bits on the background photo such as dirt. After that I cropped the photo to get rid of the negative space. Then I opened an ink photo that I had taken for my artist copy 3 in a separate tab. I did this so that the ink fit more in the photo but the soft light was too translucent and it needed another layer to make it look right. After that I used the eraser tool to go around the ink and erase anything that wasn't needed and smooth out the edges. Next I opened up a photo that I had taken for my development two and I used the object selection tool to select the glass sphere and paste it onto the other photo. Then I went around the ball with the eraser tool to make the edges smoother, but if they got too smooth and blurred, I used the sharpen tool to sharpen them a bit more. Once the edges were smooth, I moved the ball to cover the glass ball that was already in the photo. To make to ball look like it was really in the photo, I decreased the opacity of that layer.
To edit my third photo, I opened it in Adobe Photoshop and firstly I opened my melon photo that I took for my artist copy 2 to use as the main photo. Next I cropped the photo to get rid of any negative space. I then adjusted the brightness, contrast and saturation to enhance the colours of the photo and make it stand out more. Then I used the spot healing brush tool to get rid of any unwanted marks on the photo. Next I opened an ink photo that I had taken for my artist copy 3 in a separate tab. I then used the object selection tool and the magnetic lasso tool to select the ink in that photo. Next I made the ink brighter by adjusting the brightness. Then I used the eraser tool and I went around the edge of the ink to make it blend with the photo more. After that, I moved the ink into the right position in the glass and then I changed the settings to soft light and made a copy of the layer. I did this so that the ink fit more in the photo instead of looking like it had just been stuck on, but the soft light was too translucent and it needed another layer to make it look right. Next I opened up a photo that I had taken for my development two and I used the object selection tool to select the glass sphere and paste it onto the other photo. Then I went around the ball with the eraser tool to make the edges smoother. Once the edges were smooth, I moved the ball to cover the glass ball that was already in the photo. To make to ball look like it was really in the photo, I decreased the opacity of that layer. Next I opened another ink photo that I had taken for my artist 3 copy and did the same thing as I did with the other ink photo and I put it in the other glass.
Review
How has it gone?
I think the message of my theme has been conveyed effectively because I have managed to merge techniques from all three of my artists and still show my theme of edges. I have also successfully edited the photos in photoshop using a range of different tools.
What are you pleased about?
I am pleased with my editing as I think I managed to make it look like the ink was really in the two glasses. I am also pleased with the fact that I managed to include all three of my artists, unlike my other 2 developments where I only included two
In my next Development
To make my next development work even better I need to:
Keep doing: Using techniques from all three of my artists
Do less of: I think in some of the photos, the edges of the glass ball are too blurred becuase i smoothed them with the eraser tool too much.
Do more of: Use more compositional techniques to make my work look more professional
