Study of Digital Artist One
Introduction
-
I have chosen to study the photographer Sebastian Magnani
-
I have chosen them because I really like how they have a consistent portfolio which consists of a creative chain of photos which uses mirrors. It's a very unique style compared to other photographers.

Analysing 1 of their pieces of work:

-
The subject matter of the work to the right depicts a contrast between dark and bright colours, a darker background compared to the pink flowers which adds a more pastel aesthetic to the photo
-
I think it raises the issue of global warming as you can see the flowers are dying.
-
Magnani has paid particular attention to Compositional Rules in this work, as they have intentionally used the reflection as a way to frame another aspect of the photo, He also uses the reflection as a way to contrast a darker view compared to the pastel background to add a dramatic element to the photo.
-
Magnani has also used the Formal Elements of balance as the mirror is centred which with the added use of tone and light to create a strong contrast draws the viewers eye to the centre of the photo.
-
The effect of these visual devices creates a more dramatic photo with a sombre tone but also uses calming colours to create it seem more as the aftermath of something.

Mood:
-
I think the work feels dramatic with a sense of sombreness. The artist has created this mood by using light and dark tones creating a strong contrast
-
The colours used in the work are clashing tones of pastel which helps represent the dead flowers establishing a sense of sombreness.

Technical analysis:

-
I think that this work was probably taken with a tripod to add stability to to the image and keep it as centred as possible adding a sense of symmetry and balance to the photo.
-
The artist has used I think Magnani has chosen to edit the photo using adobe lightroom n in order to enhance the light in the photo and add a black and white aesthetic to the photo.
-
In this work the camera has been focused on the mirror and its reflection as the rest of the photo is quite and calm which draws the viewers eye to the centre..
-
The artist has used a medium aperture to create a Medium depth of field. I can tell this because the photo is taken from a short distance
-
This draws the viewers eye to the centre of the photos, focusing in on the reflection of the tree branches.
-
I can tell that Magnani has also used a medium Shutter Speed because they wanted a simple and sharp photo.
-
It would have been best for them to use a medium ISO like 60 to take this work because the light to dark ratio is balanced.

Intent:
-
Researching Magnani’s work, I have found that they made this work because they wanted to frame and photograph nature but also tell stories through their pictures and spread awareness about about environmental issues.
-
I think their work is about the beauty of nature.

Relate to your own work:
How will you be influenced by this artist’s work when planning and taking your own photos? I would like to replicate their use of mirrors and reflections in order to represent nature and the beauty of the environment I relate to home.
