Study of Digital Artist Two

Laurent Kronental

Introduction

  • I have chosen to study the photographer Laurent Kronental

  • I have chosen them because I really like how they use window shapes as frames in their work

Analysing 1 of their pieces of work:

  • The subject matter of the work to the right depicts a circular window framing a skyline.

  • Any other information about the work that is important? The negative space.

  • Kronental has paid particular attention to Compositional Rules in this work, as they have intentionally used  a contrast of darkness outside the circle to light inside the circle.

  • Kronental has also used the Formal Elements of shape to form the skyline in the centre as well as negative space surrounding the window to dramaticise the view.

  • The effect of these visual devices is drawing the viewers attention to view framed by the window

Mood:

  • I think the work feels dystopian, lonely. The artist has created this mood by contrasting the lights of the city to darkness and creates a lonely atmosphere through the use of negative space

  • The colours used in the work are the city lights within the window are the only light source creating a dystopian feel in the photo.

Technical analysis:

  • I think that this work was probably taken using a tripod to ensure the window is placed in the centre of the photo

  • The artist has used natural lighting without using any external light sources to create an authentic image

  • i believe the work has been edited in photoshop to reduce any light outside the frame to create negative space and enhance light inside the frame.

  • In this work the camera has been focused on the window and its view

  • The artist has used a small aperture to create a Shallow Depth of Field. I can tell this because limited light is coming throuigh in the photo

  • It draws the viewers eye to the window and the framed view

  • I can tell that Kronental has also used a fast Shutter Speed in order to reduce motion blur

  •  It would have been best for them to use a small ISO like 30 to take this work because its a very dark image.

Intent:

  • From looking at it, I think the work is about revealing how lonley it can be to live in a big city

  • Researching kronentals ’s work, I have found that they made this work because they like telling stories through architectural design, specifically unique shapes

  • I think their work is about creating different atmospheres and stories through the use of shapes and design elements

Relate to your own work:

  • im going to attempt to replicate his use of shapes in order to frame views and negative space in my designs.
