Study of Digital Artist One
Magdiel Lopez
Introduction
-
I have chosen to study the digital artist Magdiel Lopez
-
I have chosen him because I really like how he uses contrast and bright, saturated colours as well as interesting photo manipulation techniques that compliment the subject. I think these methods work perfectly together to add a fun element to all his pictures and definitely makes his work very captivating.
Analysing 1 of their pieces of work:
-
The subject matter of the work to the right depicts a white young girl with part of her faces cut up into sections with flowers emerging out of the holes created by the sections. There is a gradient background with bright, unnatural colours of blue, yellow and pink and the background also includes an outline of the sun filled in with yellow. The background is very lively which contrasts to the natural colours of the subject. This is an effective way to draw the viewer's eye to the person and helps to focus on the bizarre photoshopping effects on the face of the person.
-
The picture also has texts present which highlights his casual and poster style that he usually goes for.
-
Lopez has paid particular attention to Compositional Rules in this work, as they have intentionally used Contrast Between Subject and Background
-
Lopez has also used the Formal Elements of shape and form Shape and Form , Negative Space , Colour, Tone
-
All these visual devices act together to draw the viewer's attention to the the subject. For example, negative space is used by having the subject against a gradient background to direct the viewer’s eye to focus on the subject.
Mood:
-
I think the work feels exciting and enjoyable. The artist has created this mood by having flower emerging from the face which is very bold and peculiar and I think it helps to create a amusing, entertaining and lighthearted component to this image.
-
The colours used in the work are bright colour gradients as the subject's background which contrasts to the neutral and the earth tones of the person's skin and hair. The black outline of the body which is also filled in with black; lack of colour in the body of the person contrasts to the colourful background. The formal element of colour is strongly displayed in this photograph by the use of different pops of colour that aren't monochromatic which makes the image very fascinating ad less dull.
-
The person has a very neutral expression on her face which contrasts to the cheerfulness of the background which effectively make the subject the centre of focus.

Technical analysis:
-
I think that this work was probably taken using a camera with studio lighting. He also uses photoshop to edit his pictures which makes his work very professional and the interesting manipulation methods make the picture very fun and draws the attention of the viewer.
-
The artist has used studio. The lighting is very strong to make the subject stand out. The image must have been taken in front of a neutral background to make it easier to cut out in photoshop
-
The work has been edited in Photoshop. They have added text creates a poster style. Lopez has also used several photoshop tools like lasso to create different sections so that he can add a slicing effect to his images.
-
In this work the camera has been focused on the subject for example the hand and the person's face so that the subject is captured clearly
-
The artist has used a small aperture to create a large Depth of Field. I can tell this because everything in the image is in focus and it making the subject look more enhanced therefore emphasizes the intricate details of the subject and helps to draw the viewer's attention to the important elements of the subject.
-
I can tell that the stock photographer of Magdiel's work has used a medium to fast Shutter Speed to make images less sensitive to camera shake to prevent motion blur. This makes sure the features of the subject are sharp and not hazy.
-
It would have been best for them to use a medium ISO like 3200 to take this work because prevents grain so that the pictures will be well-lit and the colors and contrast in the images will be better.
Intent:
-
From looking at it, I think their work is about highlighting how ordinary things can be made interesting by adding mesmerizing photoshop manipulation effects as we as humans are accustomed to disregard the beauty in things we see everyday so by adding fun elements to his pieces he gathers the viewer's attention and indirectly makes us appreciate its magnificence.
-
Researching Lopez’s work, I have found that they made this work because he did a challenge called “A Poster A Day” — releasing one piece of artwork on his Instagram everyday for 365 days.
Relate to your own work:
-
I admire his creativity and his images are truly exquisite. I can recreate his pictures by taking portraits in a magazine style and using Photoshop to create contrast or using bright, saturated colours to make the picture stand out. The colour schemes and choices in Magdiel's work are beautiful which I will try to recreate in my project. I can also make the picture more unique by using interesting effects for example using photoshop to create a slicing effect on the person's face or having flowers emerging out of different sections of the face. I am going to watch more Photoshop tutorials and experiment with different photoshop tools to replicate Lopez's
