My Plan

Taking my Photos/Footage

In this Photo I intend to take a picture of a red apple with green paint flowing over it because the green paint represents the poison from the story.

I will need green paint, a clear water box and ring and box lights. I will also need a plain black background that contrasts with red of the apple and the green of the paint so I will use a thick piece of paper or cardboard so that my camera only focuses on the ink and not other objects that might be in the background.

The equipment I need will be DSLR Camera to get close up by zooming in and to change the camera setting like the shutter speed and ISO setting. I will use Studio Lighting so that picture is well lit.

I will include the compositional rules of contrast Between Subject and Background and the Formal Elements of Negative Space, Focus, Texture and Colour.

My Outcome

To edit my first photo, I opened it in Adobe Photoshop and I used the magic wand tool to remove the original background of the subject so that I could apply a gradient background that complimented the green paint and red apple. I used rectangular marquee tool to create vibrant gradient shapes around the apple therefore implementing the formal element of colour which makes the picture colourful and makes a bold statement hence directing the viewer's attention to the subject. It also helps to add contrast with the apple, replicating how Magdiel uses colour to contrast with subject therefore directing the viewer's eyes to the subject.

I used colour mixer and calibration to increase the saturation of the reds in the image to increase the contrast with the green to implement the compositional rule of contrast which replicates how Magdiel uses colour to create contrast in his pictures. I used the magic wand tool to remove the original background of the image so that I could apply a gradient background using the gradient tool to reproduce Magdiel's fun and colourful style and his frequent use of gradients. I used bright, rich colours for the background so it creates a joyful mood reflecting the bliss within fairytales.

To edit my third photo, I opened it in Adobe Photoshop and I increased the saturation and vibrancy of the image to improve the lighting of the image. I used the magic wand tool to remove the original background of the subject to apply a gradient background that adds colour and more of a whimsical aspect to the image. Then I used the lasso tool to create eclipses at different parts of the apple which was then filled with gradient colours using the gradient fill tool. I have demonstrated the formal element of colour because the vibrant green of the eclipses makes the picture colourful that makes a bold statement and creates contrast with the red apple hence directing the viewer's attention to the subject. I also added text to the sides of the image is something Magdiel usually uses in his pieces and it perfectly creates a poster effect.

Review

I think my composition is effective because I have taken pictures of vibrant green paint floating towards the apple demonstrating colour and texture replicating how Seveso takes pictures of movement of bright paint and uses colour. I achieved this through the use of a fast shutter speed in order to capture the paint in movement. I have created negative space around the subject so the focus of viewer's attention is on the apple and paint similar to how Seveso uses negative space to make the paint the centre of focus in his pictures. I think the message of my theme is conveyed because the green paint represents envy which links to the inferior qualities carried by villains in fairy tales hence displaying the jealousy and greed of the evil witch in snow white as dangerous and flawed displaying the eccentric ways that didactic messages are shown by fairy tales.

In addition, to add more colour I have also successfully edited in Photoshop by adding gradient backgrounds and gradient shapes with brighter colours to increase the vibrancy of the image to create a playful tone. This links to my theme of strange and fantastical as the unique methods by which the I have used colour and manipulated apple adds an aspect of peculiarity hence gathering the viewer's attention. This links to my theme as by presenting ordinary objects such as an apple in a bizarre way it further emphasises the whimsical nature of fairy tales as even normal objects carry an aspect of unusualness within them.

To make my next development work even better I need to:

Keep doing: From this development, I should keep doing gradient backgrounds as it helped to make my pictures more colourful.

Do less of: Next time, I would use a white background instead as it makes it easier to remove the background in the editing process.

Do more of: Next time, I could try filming the movement of paint to experiment with how Alberto captures the movement of paint in his pictures.
