Study of Digital Artist three
Jessica Kobeissi
Introduction
-
I have chosen to study the photographer Jessica Kobeissi
-
I have chosen them because I really like how they using light and colour in their photography by incorporating through her outfits and locations.

Analysing 1 of their pieces of work:

-
The subject matter of the work to the right depicts a girl wearing a bright green shirt with a dull background behind her to lead the viewer's eye to the model making her stand out.
-
Kobeissi uses takes soft, dreamy pictures of women in streets or urban areas. She creates these dreamlike images by using natural light effectively in her pictures. She uses to light in the picture to the right to create beautiful shadows behind the model and she also uses it to reflect light towards the model's earing and her clothes to bring attention to the fabric and other delicate details of her outfit.
-
Kobeissi has paid particular attention to Compositional Rules in this work, as they have intentionally used The Rule of Thirds, Central Eye Dominant, Contrast Between Subject and Background by using colour .For example, she has a dull background and colourful clothes.
-
Kobeissi has also used the Formal Elements of Shape and Form (the shadow behind the model), Focus, Texture, Strong Lines, Colour, Light
-
The effect of these visual devices is used to direct the viewer’s eye to focus on the subject. For example, she uses strong lines in the background of the model which contrasts to the fluidity of the outfit creating a center of focus on the model.
Mood:
-
I think the work feels calm. The artist has created this mood by taking her pictures in natural light to create a dreamy portrait which has a soothing effect and the seamless contrast between the subject and background creates a peaceful atmosphere.
-
Kobeissi uses colour successfully by having a lack of colour in the background however she also combines one overarching colour that stand out to create a pop of colour. For example, she uses the bright green of the model's outfit to lead the viewer to focus on the subject. In addition, it also creates a striking contrast to the background which makes her work very distinctive. She uses low key photography to accentuates the contours of the subject and to create shadows behind the model.
-
The model creates an angle with her arms framing her face and she uses the compositional rule of centre eye dominant to draw focus to her face. She has a neutral face expression instead of exaggerated face which suits the overall calming mood.

Technical analysis:

-
I think that this work was probably taken using DSLR camera, focus lens, reflector. These equipment is needed to create a more professional photoshoot. A focus lens allow the photographer to focus very close to the subject which is vital portrait photography. A reflector allows you to manipulate the lighting around you to fill in or create shadows and allows you to decide which direction the subject is lit from.
-
The artist has used natural lighting. They are lit from the side to create deep shadows. Kobeissi uses soft light in her pictures to create shadows with a gradual transition from light to dark so that there are no harsh shadow lines.
-
The work has been edited in Photoshop. They used several tools on camera raw filter, gradient maps and curves layers to improve the lighting in her images and create the look of a typical film photography image.
-
In this work, the camera has been focused on the subject, such as the hand or the person's face, to ensure the subject is clearly displayed.
-
The artist has used a medium aperture to create a Long Depth of Field. I can tell because the whole image is in focus which ensures the background and the subject remain at sharp focus drawing the viewer's attention to the smoothness of how the subject and background work together. This is done to bring the model in focus, making them the most important element in the work without disregarding the background.
-
I can tell that Kobeissi has also used a medium Shutter Speed to reduce motion blur from the model transitioning between poses.
-
It would have been best for them to use a small ISO like 400 to take this work because it creates less grain.

Intent:
-
From looking at it, I think the work is about capturing the lines, colors, and textures of the clothes by picking out bright clothes with a contrasting background to bring more attention to them.
-
Researching Kobeissi’s work, I have found that during her early years online graphic designing she was exposed to a lot of fashion magazine editorial scans from Harpers, Vogue, Elle, Nylon etc so fashion was something she has always been in love with

Relate to your own work:
-
Kobeissi's use of colour in the picture is what makes her picture intriguing. I will be implementing the concept of colour in my images like her. I am going to attempt this by choosing outfits with colours that are contrasting or complementary to the background. I will also choose locations that work splendidly with the model's outfits to create a beautiful colour scheme
-
Her use of light is also what makes her work interesting. I will replicate her style using photoshop to exaggerate the lighting to make it more deep and dramatic
-
I can also make the picture more unique by using interesting effects I am going to watch more Photoshop tutorials and experiment with different photoshop tools to replicate Jessica Kobeissi's fashion magazine editorial style that is present in her pictures and also to add the effect that my pictures have been taken with a film camera which is something that Jessica does with her pictures.
