Study of Digital Artist Two

Paul Reiffer

Introduction

  • I have chosen to study the photographer Paul Reiffer

  • I have chosen them because I really like how they focus on natural surroundings and the sky.

Analysing 1 of their pieces of work:

  • The subject matter of the work to the right depicts landscape photography but the natural colours of the surroundings are vibrant.

  • Any other information about the work that is important? The photograph has been taken at natural landscapes.

  • Reiffer has paid particular attention to Compositional Rules in this work, as they have intentionally used the rule of thirds to take the photograph.

  • Reiffer has also used the Formal Elements of focus as there is a clear landscape in the photograph  and the idea of colour and tone as the sunset uses vibrant colours.

  • The effect of these visual devices is to clearly draw the viewers eyes to the landscape.

Mood:

  • I think the work feels calm the artist has created this mood by... keeping the image subtle and minimalistic.

  • The colours used in the work are pinks and purples ,all the colours are subtle .

  • There are no people in the photograph but natural landscapes are the main subject.

Technical analysis:

  • I think that this work was probably taken using no lighting as it is a natural setting

  • The artist has used natural lighting but is lit from the sky of the photograph.

  • Do you think the work has been edited in Photoshop/Premier Pro? If so, how have they edited it and why?

  • I think they used photoshop to manipulate the colours in the photograph to appear more vibrant.

  • In this work the camera has been focused on the ice piece won the photograph to the left but also drawing the viewers attention the sky.

  • The artist has used a big aperture to create a Long Depth of Field. I can tell this because in the image we are looking out far accross the landscape

  •  it has a calming effect especially with the subtle tones and the clouds.

  • I can tell that [Reiffer's] has also used a fast Shutter Speed because they wanted to reduce motion blur and to ensure the image is clear.

  • It would have been best for them to use a low ISO like [roughly 400/800] to take this work because these images are majority taken at sunset.

Intent:

  • From looking at it, I think the work is about…

  • Research Reiffer’s work, I have found that they made this work because the images capture landscapes frame by interesting scenery with the combination of appealing colours.

  • I think their work is about portraying the sky and  urban landscapes

Relate to your own work:

  • I will have to find locations far out from the city with minimal buildings in sight..
