  • The theme I am going to respond to is 'Strange and Fantastical'. I am interested in exploring the art of my childhood favourite fairytales and digital manipulation. This aspect of my theme fascinates me as fairytales were a huge part of my childhood and i always loved watching and learning about fantasyies and strange things with extraordinary cinematography and animations. I also was fascinated by the characters and their indemnity and how they were presented. I would like to use photography to explore my nostalgia and imagination and present my love for fairytales in my work.

  • In addition, I will also be responding to fairytales where there is representation of culture. Many fairytales consisted of only white Eurocentric female characters, where a man has to be the hero and save them. As a child, this was problematic as it taught the wrong things, and showed a lack of representation and set beauty standards for young girls. However , I have chosen to respond to the fairytale of Aladdin, where Jasmine will be my main subject. This is because she is a fierce woman, and is a good representation of brown females and their culture, what they wear and she opposes beauty standards of our generation and is strong. This movie was significant ans i made many young girls and boys feel included and although it is only a fantasy, they had characters they could relate to. My aim is to create empowering pictures of women, addressing issues such as colourism and lack of representation.

  • I am interested in developing my knowledge of colour and visual effects in Photography in order to create fantasy. This is why I have chosen to study the artists Magdiel Lopez, Alberto Seveso and Simrah Farrukh. All three of my artists use colours in different ways which presents the distinctiveness of fairy tales. Magdiel uses pastel and saturated colours, while Alberto uses vibrant and rich colours whereas Simrah uses calm and soft but also bright colours.

  • I will expand the use of color and visual effects in my work and explore the fairy tale theme by using Photoshop to digitally manipulate facial features or backgrounds like Magdiel Lopez to represent the eccentric nature of the fairy tales in the series. I will use colours associated with fairy tales through costumes and cultural attire that mimic the use of color and contrast in Simrah Farrukh’s clothes to create stylish character portraits that show both sides of reality and fantasy in this fairytale. story. In addition, I will also use Alberto Seveso’s work with paint as the seamless movement of the vibrant colours mix together, creating a whimsical but calm mood, as fairytales do.
