Study of Digital Artist three

Simrah Farrukh

Introduction

  • I have chosen to study the photographer Simrah Farrukh.

  • I have chosen them because I really like how they using light and colour in their photography by incorporating through her outfits and locations. Through this she uses South Asian women dressed in their elegant and cultural attire, empowering their beauty.

Analysing 1 of their pieces of work:

  • The subject matter of the work to the right depicts South Asian females such as a Pakistani Woman dressed in their culture’s sequinned and majestic clothing, to show the power of women of colour. Simrah Farrukh’s work is a good representation of SA women in the media, and she portrays them exquisitely.

  • Farrukh has paid particular attention to Compositional Rules in this work, as they have intentionally used The Rule of Thirds, Central Eye Dominant and Contrast Between Subject and Background.

  • Farrukh has also used the Formal Elements of Focus, Texture, Colour and Tone/Light.

  • These visual devices work together to form an influencing and passionate image with a message behind it, and these all draw the viewers attention to the subject and its details.

Mood:

  • I think the work feels calm but also effective and powerful. The artist has created this mood by capturing women embracing their culture and defying our generation’s ‘beauty standards’ and feeling comfortable in their own skin and culture.

  • The colours used in the work are bold and vibrant as South Asian cultures are but can also be soft and vintage, showing a balanced representation.

  • The people have fierce but neutral and strong facial expressions to show the power of women of colour and a good portrayal of them, matching the overall mood of their piece.

Technical analysis:

  • I think that this work was probably taken using a DSLR Camera, a focus lens and a reflector. These help to create a more professional photoshoot which Simrah Farrukh does, and this allows the photographer to focus the subject and manipulate the lighting around for this portrait photography.

  • The artist has used natural lighting. They are lit from the side and the front to highlight the model’s skin tone. Farrukh uses soft light in their photography for warm and balanced shadows.

  • I think the work has been edited in Photoshop. They have used several photoshop tools and curve layers to enhance components of the image such as saturation and contrast, for a more vintage, professional finish.

  • In this work the camera has been focused on the face of the model to ensure the subject is clearly displayed.

  • The artist has used a medium aperture to create a Long Depth of Field. I can tell this because the model is in focus and the background is less focused on, and is calm contrasting the powerful subject, which is aesthetic to the eye and the viewer’s attention.

  • I can tell that Farrukh has also used a medium Shutter Speed to reduce motion blur as the model changes poses when pictures are being taken.

  • It would have been best for them to use a small iso like 400 to prevent too much grain in the picture and sp the picture isn’t too bright/dark.

Intent:

  • From looking at it, I think the work is about representing SA women and giving their beauty and strength the regocnition it deserves.

  • Researching Farrukh]’s work, I have found that they made this work because they like to capture memories in the moment through photos and like to represent asian identity through their photography, remembering her roots and heritage.

  • I think their work is about bringing up women of colour and showing they’re much more than just their skin colour, and teaching them to embrace it and to teach people about diversity and culture, and fill in the gap of representation of brown women.

Relate to your own work:

  • I will also take pictures of strong Pakistani girls in Asian attire, to empower their beauty and ethnic features and their heritage.
