Lindsay adler

Photographer

Introduction

  • I have chosen to study the photographer Lindsay Adler

  • I have chosen them because I really like how she contrasts the hues of the lights

Analysing 1 of their pieces of work:

  • The subject matter of the work to the right depicts a woman draped in statement jewellery and having coloured lights being reflected on her.

  • Adler has paid particular attention to Compositional Rules in this work, as they have intentionally used contrast in order to make the colours bold and vivid .

  • Adler has also used the Formal Elements of colour and tone to create a powerful impact to the viewer's eyes.

  • The effect of these visual devices is that it creates a pleasing image to the viewer and constructs a clear contrast in the colours that Adler has used. It also makes the colours pop and allows you to comprehend the mood being conveyed in the photograph.

Mood:

  • I think the work feels dramatic and ambient. The artist has created this mood by a clever visual display of lighting.

  • The colours used in the work are analogous. The use of the analogous colours of cerulean and magenta pink creates a stimulating shimmer that pleases the eye, a source of enigma.

  • The model used in this photograph has her gaze elsewhere, providing the viewer with a side profile of her earrings. The skilful placement of her hand draws the viewer's attention to the ring on her finger. The overall mood of the model contrasts as it is more dark and cryptic as a opposed to the bright lights being shone on her.

Technical analysis:

  • I think that this work was probably taken using lighting and coloured gels/filters, this provides the tint of colour on the model's face.

  • The artist has used studio lighting placed at a certain angle to achieve soft shadows being reflected on the models.

  • I think the work has been altered on Photoshop, for example enhancing the image

  • In this work the camera has been focused on the model as she fills the frame.

  • The artist has used a large aperture to create a shallow Depth of Field. I can tell this because the model is closest to the camera and is in full focus whereas the background is more out of focus.

  •  The effect of this draws our attention to the colours being beamed on to the model who is the focal point.

  • I can tell that Adler has also used a fast Shutter Speed because she wanted to reduce motion blur as much as possible to get a clear image.

  • It would have been best for them to use a high ISO like 100 to take this work because the light to dark ratio is balanced

Intent:

  • From looking at it, I think the work is about portraying a artistic fashion photoshoot that involves various coloured lights.

  • Researching Adler’s work, I have found that they made this work because they have a New York-based business in the photography sector, specifically in fashion lighting.

  • I think their work is about being able to express your mood and feelings and envision the artist's story through lighting.

Relate to your own work:

  • I will take pictures using a variety of coloured gels like Lindsay Adler and convey different moods through the use of colour.
