Study of Digital Artist Two

Laura Estrada

Introduction

  • I have chosen to study the photographer Laura Estrada.

  • I have chosen them because I really like how they designed very distinctive jewellery to place on the model's face.

Analysing 1 of their pieces of work:

  • The subject matter of the work to the right depicts a woman wearing a golden face piece that contours to the model's cheekbones. The viewer's eyes are then led to the way in which the wire hooks around her face.

  • Estrada has paid particular attention to Compositional Rules in this work, as they have intentionally used 'Central Eye Dominant' to give off the impression that their eyes are following you.

  • Estrada has also used the Formal Elements of Shape and Form to further enhance the construction of the photo.

  • The effect of these visual devices is that is accentuates the shaping of the model's face and creates a focal point for the viewer to observe.

Mood:

  • I think the work feels quite stimulating and yet serene. The artist has created this mood by using peculiar jewellery pieces as the focal point.

  • The colours used in the work are neutral colours ranging along the skin colour spectrum. There is also an accent of gold which stands out to contrast with the complexion of the models.

  • The people are quite emotionless yet neutral which is a direct contrast to the overall animated mood of the image.

Technical analysis:

  • I think that this work was probably taken using a tripod, props and lighting. This creates a steady and clear image.

  • The artist has used studio lighting and lit it from a specific direction. They have also used soft light to create a 'shadowless' effect on the image and to make the model's faces look smoother.

  • I think the work has been edited on Photoshop to further enhance the image. For example the brightness and contrast of colours of the image may have been altered with.

  • In this work the camera has been focused on the model and the jewellery on her face.

  • The artist has used a large aperture to create a Shallow Depth of Field. I can tell this because the background of the images, particularly  the one on the left, is very blurry. As a result of this, the viewer's eyes are drawn to the model and the embellishments around her face, making it the most important element of the photograph.

  • I can tell that Estrada has also used a fast Shutter Speed because she wanted to reduce any blurriness from motion.

  • It would have been best for them to use a large ISO, like 200, to take these pieces because it creates a smooth finish on the images.

Intent:

  • From looking at it, I think the work is about creating a different view on bijouterie.

  • Researching Estrada's work, I have found that they made this work because she has a business and a passion in designing sustainable, sculptural adornments for the body.

  • I think their work is about being unique and 'en vogue' (in fashion).

Relate to your own work:

  • My work will be influenced by Laura Estrada through the usage of sculpted wire moulded to the model's face.
