Development One

My Plan

Within my development I hope to combine some of my chosen artists, and make sure my work is about my theme and include my own ideas as well.

1. combine influences from each of my 3 chosen artists

2. make sure my work is about my theme

3. include my own research and ideas

My first try at this is in Development 1.  I will create a series of three edited photos of landscapes (sunsets/sunrises) through a glass ball or glasses of water. Which will encompass Suzanne Saroff and aspects of Ansel Adams but with my own ideas aswell. This will link to my theme because it will hopefully not be normal and look Strange and Fantastical.

Taking my Photos/Footage

In these photos I will attempt to take photos of landscapes in the morning and at night so that the sunsets and sunrises will be really nice. I am choosing to do this to match with my theme of strange and fantastical.

I will have to take photos of landscapes with glass balls. I will also need a glass ball to use in the photo. I have chosen these to try and imitate some of my artists and link it to my theme. I will need a Camera, Studio Lighting, broad landscape and a glass ball. I have chosen them because they are closest to my chosen artists.

I will need to take my photos with a large landscape that overlook a lot of greenery and wildlife (just natural landscapes).

I will use the rule of thirds and keep it framed appealingly, leading lines that follow the shape of the glass ball. I will also use the formal elements of colour to contrast between the background and subject, space so that the eye is drawn to the subject of the photo and form, because the photoshopped landscape into the glass ball in the book shelf needs to be very precise and accurate so that it looks realistic.

To edit my first photo of the refracted landscape in the glass ball, I opened it into photoshop and cropped it to fill the frame appropriately (which was minimal as it was already very filled in the frame). Then I created a new layer and adjusted the brightness and contrast to make the different colours more noticeable. Again I created another layer but this time to specifically to adjust the hue and saturation, this allowed me to change the different colours to a similar hue. I then used the photo filter tool to create a filter over the entire image, I did this to make the overall colours blend together a bit more and look more natural together. And finally I used the colour balance tool to change and accent the current colours to look brighter or more muted etc.

To edit my second photo of my first development I opened it in Adobe Photoshop and cropped the background photo so that it was an acceptable size. I then made a brightness and contrast filter to change the brightness and contrast to make the image brighter and contrast more, trying to make it look better and more pleasing to a viewer. Similarly to the first photo also made a hue and saturation filter to change some colours, and match the overall photo and style of work, and to fit into my theme of strange and fantastical. Finally I made a vibrance layer to adjust the vibrance of the image then the saturation on the vibrance filter to make the colours all blend a bit more into each other.

To edit my third photo of my first development I opened it in Adobe Photoshop and did exactly the same process to get the glass ball in the photo of the book shelf  as the first two photos for the development. But when editing the whole image. I used the lighting adjustments to soften the lighting that was previously there. Put a filter over the whole photo to make it look more realistic. And finally used the colour balance tool to emphasise the colours I wanted more visible. I then used the burn tool to darken the colours in the glass ball to make it more realistic.

Review

How has it gone?

I would like to think that it went rather well, it did take a while to complete but I did complete two photos. In this piece I have successfully taken the photos and made them all incorporate Ansel Adams and Suzanne Saroff aspects of photography.

What are you pleased about?

I am pleased with the way they turned out because they aren't terrible photos and they distorted the landscapes well enough to look good and link to my theme of strange and fantastical because of everything being upside down.

In my next Development

To make my next development work even better I need to:

Keep doing: Keep trying to get the right photos that fit my theme and style, and being able to get photos that look good and are similar to my chosen photographers.

Do less of: Depending completely photos I have already taken and use photoshop more confidently to hopefully make it even more interesting to the viewer, also being able to include my third photographer.

Do more of: Planning and including more editing/photoshopping but not completely dependent, being more confident with photoshopping images together. Also furtherly  developing the developments to try and make them and make them look like the artists.
