Study of Digital Artist three
Victoria Siemer

Introduction

  • I have chosen to study the photographer Victoria Siemer

  • I have chosen them because I really like how she uses her own landscape photography and makes it look very unusual and noticeable

Analysing 1 of their pieces of work:

  • The subject matter is the edges of the flipped landscape making it very strange but look incredibly satisfying, the contrasting lines bring the viewers eye to the attention of the change. It almost makes the image look like there is a doorway to some other world.

  • To try and create 'emotional fragmentation', possibly meaning making the viewer reflect on themselves and try to make them see themselves in a different emotional way

  • Siemer has paid particular attention to leading lines, colour contrast-blending the colours that have been flipped on each other. Framing, she has flipped it in the centre of the image making more visually pleasing.

  • Siemer has used the Formal Elements of Negative space, Shapes, Tone and light and Balance.

  • The effect of these visual devices is that the eye is drawn to the centre where the lines contrast against the back on the image. And the colours that blend very effectively.

Mood:

  • I think the work makes the image feel very surreal and calming using her own images to get this effect.

  • The colours present in the image are very pastel and muted making the art feel calm and almost reflective, Siemer very successfully achieved this, and overall making her art Strange and Fantastical.

  • There not many human interactions in her work but they sometimes do appear and it is always in a surreal way to make it look unusual, and sometimes animals like birds are visible.

Technical analysis:

  • The artist uses her own photography and manipulates them in photoshop which makes them incredibly strange and fantastical

  • The lighting in Siemer's work is all natural with what I think is no studio lighting due to the majority of her photography being landscapes, there is also a variation on hard and soft lighting.

  • The actual image itself is her own photo and no other images have been included in the final outcome of her photos, but she will have had to use a variation of different photoshop tools to get the outcome she does.

  • The image focus is the edges in which the photo changes, this contrast makes the photo more interesting and catches the viewers eye.

  • The photos have been taken on a DSLR camera and then have been edited on photoshop (or some similar website) through using tools like cropping, copying and pasting.

  • Also tools like the burn tool and the blur tool to make the transition smoother and more real looking and possibly the brush tool to get rid of extra edges or get back some edges.

  • This immediately draws the eye to the focus of the image which is the flipped mountain and the edges around it as it directly contrasts between the background.

Intent:

  • From looking at it, I think the work is about taking things out of a different perspective and making them look like dream like phantasies

  • Researching Peter's work, I have found that she made her work from her inspiration of the idea of 'emotional fragmentation' and other inspiring photographers and their styles.

Relate to your own work:

  • I will try to imitate her by using my photography to imitate her and make it as similar as possible while also incorporating my theme of strange and fantastical and then blending her style into my final outcome.
