Study of Artist One
Aaron Griffin
Aaron Griffin is an illustrator and concept artist based in the UK. His work is often used in games, such as Gears of War 4, which creates a mystical feel to his work which is also carried into his portraiture work as he uses lighting and colours to create an almost mystical beauty.
The work I have chosen to copy, as seen in the top right, displays a female figure who appears to be in an asymmetrical position in the left third. The subject is facing away from the viewer and has her eyes closed creating a distance and an impersonal feel to this piece. Through the use of hard lighting coming from behind the subject, the artist has created shadows which are further highlighted by the contrast of the blue and pink tones. The pink tones create a sense of warmth while the blue tones juxtapose this as they give off a cooler vibe yet together they create harmony within the piece. There are a variety of brush strokes used in this piece as there are multiple layers to it which add depth.

When completing this artist copy I used photoshop and a graphics tablet. I created multiple layers and used a variety of brushes in order to ensure that I was getting all the details of Griffin’s work. When I started this piece I used bigger strokes to create the foundation of the piece and then used smaller brush strokes to add the finer details such as the hair and reflection in the glasses.
I have chosen to study Griffin’s work as I would like to explore his digital painting style and use it in my own work. I also enjoy the way he uses lighting to create shadows and add depth to his work and would therefore like to carry this onto my own work as I believe it would help me portray my theme clearly.
