For my second development, I decided to experiment by animating the butterflies so that they are moving and I also decided to combine the colours that both my artists, Yip and Griffin, use. I was especially inspired by Griffin's use of vibrant colours as I think the beauty of the butterflies is expressed even more. This development was also influenced by Yip's colour scheme as I had part of the background in different grey tones in order to draw emphasis to the butterflies and the subject's fascination with them. I hope that this intrigue will also be mirrored in my viewers. For this piece, my subject is in the left third which gives the piece an asymmetrical composition. I will be incorporating Griffin's painting style as well as Yip's as this development merges their styles which creates an even more realistic-looking piece. To complete this development I will use Photoshop to paint my female subject and then I will create separate frames for the butterflies and draw them on top using a graphics tablet.

The butterflies used in my second development will be inspired by Butterflies at the Butterfly Farm but for the movement of them, I will be using the following YouTube video ( as seen on the right) for inspiration.

Development Two

My Plan
My Outcome
The Process

When completing my second development I had to split it into two parts: the digital painting of my subject and then animating the butterflies on top.

To begin with I outlined my subject and then created multiple layers in order to paint over each section separately. I initially used thicker brush strokes to create a base before using thinner ones to add the detail and realism. I then used the adjustment filter to duplicate the layer and create a black and white version in order to be able to overlay and have a black and white background. To do this I layered the coloured and black and white version of the digital painting and used the eraser tool while the black and white layer was selected to reveal the vibrant colours.

For the butterfly part, I imported the video into Photoshop and on each frame I got rid of the background and outlined the butterflies. I then used my  butterfly photos for reference to paint the colours.

For this process I used finer brushes as the butterflies were quite small so needed more detail.
