Study of Artist Two
Peony Yip
Peony Yip is an artist based in Hong Kong, She aims to explore the relationship between humans, animals and nature which is something I would like to explore in my own work. She often merges animals and humans in her work.

I hope to take inspiration from Yip and explore the relationship between insects and humans in my own work. I like the way the viewer is drawn to the butterflies and then consequently the female subject and would like to experiment with Yip’s way of using colour.

The work I have chosen to copy, as seen on the left-hand side, displays a female figure facing away from the viewer showing the back of her head. The subject has her hair up in a bun which is surrounded by yellow butterflies. The butterflies surround the top of the bun, suggesting a sense of intrigue that highlights the interest and relationship between humans and insects. The colours used for the subject are different shades of white, grey and black which allows the butterflies of the piece to stand out even more as the vibrancy of the yellow brings focus to the butterflies. Similar to the tone of the subject, grey connotes sophistication, building habitats and materials often used in an urban lifestyle. Whereas the yellow used for the butterflies connotes hope and happiness which links to the insect as it symbolises transformation and change. Through the fine brush strokes and tones, Yip creates the hair's realistic texture, consequently adding depth to the piece. Furthermore, the background of this piece is plain allowing the artist to draw the viewer's attention directly to the interaction between the butterflies and the woman.
