My Final Outcome

My final piece is an animation which takes inspiration from different aspects of my two artists as it incorporates their style and ideas which have evolved through my development work. I took a video of my subject, who is the centre third, looking from one side of the screen to the other. The video begins with the subject's face turned away with their hair facing the viewer; this starting position is inspired by my artist's copy of Peony Yip's work. I placed coloured plastic over a ring light in order to get the purples and blues, similar to Aaron Griffin's work. The piece starts black and white, inspired by Yip’s tones but as the butterflies come into the frame colour is exposed. I decided to do this as I wanted to illustrate the beauty that comes with butterflies and the change that they symbolise: before the butterflies come in the grey tones connote boredom, perhaps even loss but when the butterflies come in the colour symbolises hope, life and energy. Additionally, because the subject is initially facing away from the viewer, it establishes a distance between them; however, as the piece develops and the butterflies begin to appear, the subject is revealed more, adding a more intimate touch and hence insinuating the power a butterfly holds. For this piece, I will carry on taking inspiration and using the blue butterflies from my third development as I like the boldness of their colour. I hope that through my digitally painted animation, the viewer is captivated by the beauty and change that a butterfly carries and is further inspired by this. To complete my final piece I will be using Photoshop and a graphics tablet to paint over each frame and draw in the butterflies. I have placed the video I have taken and will be using for my final piece below.

The Process

The above screenshots show the process of painting one frame and the below screenshots show the process of another frame. For my final piece, I imported my video into Photoshop from video frames to layers and then for each frame as I went along I duplicated it to make it black and white. Then with the lasso and eraser tool, I got rid of certain parts of the black-and-white layer to reveal the colour. As each frame progressed, I erased more of the black-and-white layer. I outlined my subject and then created a base using thicker brushes and the colour-picking tool; after that, I used thinner brushes to add detail to the face and to draw the butterflies. The brushes I used in each frame are seen on the right-hand side.
