My first development will take inspiration from both of my artists in order to produce a piece of work where the viewer can be captivated by the beauty of butterflies. In order to do this, I have been inspired by the way Yip uses colour so in my development I will portray my human subject using different grey tones while the butterflies stand out in yellow; this will draw attention to their beauty, hence illustrating my theme centred around insects. The subject will be surrounded by negative space as the background will be one solid colour, inspired by Yip's work so that the viewer is not distracted and can focus on the butterflies. Griffin's influence on my work will be seen through the painting style as I will be using thicker brush strokes on my subject and the strokes on the side that will frame my subject.

The human subject of this piece is centred in the middle third and there are three butterflies as the human eye is attracted visually to items that present themselves in threes. This also means that the viewer's attention is immediately drawn to the butterflies in the centre meaning that they are fascinated by the butterfly, its colour, beauty and symbolism. The images of the female subjects used for my development work were taken with the light coming in from the left-hand side and the butterflies were taken at The Butterfly Farm. To edit my work and complete the digital painting, I used Photoshop and a Wacom graphics tablet.

The Process

I began this development by using the lasso tool to cut out the butterfly and transfer this on to a different layer to be on top of my subject. I decided to place three butterflies around my subject as items in threes attract the human eye; I also put them in a position where they almost form a triangle.I used the crop tool to extend the canvas size as I wanted my subject to be in the centre third. I then filled the background with a solid colour, creating negative space and keeping the focus on the subject and the butterflies.

I then duplicated the layer and selected my subject and using the adjustments tab I made the subject black and white. After this, I began the digital painting process in which I outlined my subjects and used my photo as reference to colour pick the colours i needed. I created thicker brush strokes, specifically using the dry media brushes which i then blended out using wet media brushes. For smaller, more intricate features, such as the butterflies wings and eyes, I used thinner brushes to ensure that it was detailed. After digitally painting the subjects face in black and white tones I used a thinner brush to add colour to certain areas in order to frame the face even more. I also framed the entire subject by using a large brush to frame the corners and drawing even more attention to the subject. I did this in the same yellow I used for the butterflies.
