Study of Digital Artist One
Nick Fancher
Introduction
-
I have chosen to study the photographer Nick Fancher

Analysing 1 of their pieces of work:

-
The subject matter of the work to the right is the woman.
-
Fancher has paid particular attention to Compositional Rules in this work, as they have intentionally used a contrast between subject and background as well as centre eye dominant
-
The effect of using these is that the woman is emphasised in the photo and is what our attention is directly brought to.
-
Fancher has also used the Formal Elements of repetition, colour and light
-
The effect of using these is this layered shadowed allusion.

Mood:
-
I think the work feels both calming but also mysterious
-
This is created through the laying effect. It almost seems endless and the colours blend into each other in a way creating a sense of calmness. However the sense of the unknown past the last colour used creates a mysterious mood about the piece.

Technical analysis:

-
I think that this work was probably taken using a tripod as well as studio lighting using coloured gels.
-
The shadows in the work are sharp so they have used a filter to create hard light.
-
The work has been edited in photoshop to add all the photos together to create the layered perspective.
-
In this work the camera has been focused on the women's face.
-
The artist has used a medium aperture to create a medium depth of field.
-
I can tell that for each individual photo the artists used a medium shutter speed as they didn't need to capture a quick movement however they also didn't want to create a light trail.
-
It would have been best for them to use a medium ISO as they wouldn't have wanted a really grainy photo but I think if they used a medium ISO they would get a slightly grainy outcome adding to the blurred allusion when they were added onto one another.

Intent:
-
From first looking at it, I thought the work was about experimenting with technical elements and styles of photography whilst working with different people in order to reflect their style of expression.
-
When researching Fancher's work I discovered that in October 2022 he opened up his studio to anyone where they could pay $250 to have a piece done in his style. Even though it was a payed experience I think the concept of letting anyone model and express themselves sends such a powerful message as there are lots of stereotypes spread in the media that to model or to look 'perfect' and 'beautiful' you have to look a certain way when there is no such thing as 'perfect' .
Relate to your own work:
-
In my own work I would love to incorporate how he uses different styles, colours, textures and lighting shooting for both humans and objects.
