My Response to Davison's work

My Response

To respond to the work of Davison's, I intend to take and edit photos in Photoshop.

My work will link to my artist because I will also use mirror and edit them into a monochromatic style.

I will use a range of models as well as shapes of mirror as this is what Davison does in his work.

The equipment I need will be a DSLR camera, different shaped mirrors as well as studio lighting. I will also use a black background

I will include the Compositional Rules and Formal Elements of shape, negative space and tone.

Doing this will link to my theme because I would like to show the difference between reality and what we see in ourselves or online.

My Three Edits

Editing process :
To begin editing this photo I changes the tone to black and white and adjusted the brightness and contrast in order to highlight the shadow on the left side of her face. To reflect the low key style of Davisons photography, I wanted minimal colour so I created a mask of her hand and the mirror in order to implement the use of a black background as this created the simplistic look that I wanted.

I feel as though this photo really captures the story I was trying to portray. The way we see ourselves and how others perceive us can really vary and I think that simplicity of having one mirror and that being the only focus in the photograph is really powerful.

Editing process:

To make this a successful artist copy, I turned the photo black and white and adjusted the brightness and contrast in order to create the low key stye photos Davison does.

Similarly to the last edit I love the simplicity and the cohesiveness of this photograph. However, something that I think would be beneficial for me to do as I progress through my project is to potentially explore different ways in which I can use the mirrors, whether that be multiple stacked on top of each other or using different shapes.

I imported the photo of the hand into photoshop and changed it to black and white. I then imported the photo of Katie’s reflection in the mirror and did the same. As I didn’t have a distinct shape mirror I imported the one Davison had done, in order to copy the shape. I created a mask of katie’s reflection in the mirror as well as the mirror from Davisons work in order to layer her face into the mirror. Once the mirror had been created, I copied the layer and staggered it slightly, then blurred the edge to of the effect of the 3D mirror.

I think the reflection in the mirror matches the artist’s moods accurately however if I were to improve this piece I would attempt to darken the light in the first image in order to match the light that can be seen in the reflection.
