Study of Digital Artist Two

Jake Davison

Introduction

  • I have chosen to study the photographer Jake Davison.

  • I have chosen them because I like the way he uses low key photography doing many pieces in simply just black and white a long with muted tones.

Analysing 1 of their pieces of work:

  • The subject matter of the work to the right is the face within the mirror.

  • Davison has paid particular attention to Compositional Rules in this work, as they have intentionally used framing.

  • The effect of using this technique is that we are intention is directly brought to the reflection of the face.

  • Davison has also used the Formal Elements of shape, negative space focus as well as tone. The mirror has a distinct shape with sharp edges contrasting the soft curves of the hand, the negative space around the hand means that the photo is kept quite simple adding to the minimalistic nature of is photography as well as creating a darker mood.

Mood:

  • I think the work feels dark and eary due to the low key lighting that is used.

  • In this photo the photographer has chosen to use a monochromatic colour pallet rather than colours.

  • The woman in the photo has a solemn expression again adding to the overall tone of the piece.

Technical analysis:

  • I think that this work was probably taken using studio lighting and a mirror.

  • The shadows in the work are sharp creating a hard light photography.

  • The work has been edited in Photoshop to darken the shadows as well as adjust the brightness and contrast of the tones.

  • In this work the camera has been focused on the mirror. I can tell because the hand is blurred slightly.

  • The artist has used a  low aperture to create a short depth of field

  • I think that the photographer would have chosen to use a medium shutter speed as a quick moment didn't need to be captured but light trails didn't need to be created either.

  • It would have been best for them to use a medium ISO to create a slight grain on the photograph.

Intent:

  • From first looking at it, I thought the work was about self-expression as well as how we perceive things.

  • When researching Davisons’s work, I have found that they made this work because he wanted to explore the the threshold between reality and imagination.

Relate to your own work:

I chose to study Davison because I wanted to explore the idea of how reality is different to the stories and world that is created online.
