The series I have decided to study by Agnes Grochulska, a contemporary painter, is ‘The Outline Series’ her expressive strokes combined with her abstract form capture and represent the emotions and spirit of her subject. She doesn’t only focus on depicting her subjects' details but tries to portray “that particular something that drew [her] to that subject in the first moment”.

I think that Grochulska uses the bold, vivid coloured outline and impasto strokes to capture the distinct facial features of her subject, drawing less attention to the rest of their figure but rather highlighting their expression. This also proves room for the viewer to determine which emotions they see in the subject as she prefers to create artwork “in which not everything is fully realised”.

When painting I began by mixing the colours and just setting a rough base before using more paint and impasto strokes to add texture to the painting as Grochulska does. I used a thinner brush for finer details like the eyes. I painted the background and added a bright blue outline to finish it off.

I am taking inspiration from Grochulska’s work as she is drawn to her subject and all their emotion, meaning and importance that only humans can carry. I would also like to focus on human expression and its meaning; I like the bold outline that she uses and wants to use it in my own work to draw the viewer's focus on the subject's expression.
