Study of Artist Two

Juca Maximo

JucaMaximo is a contemporary visual artist, designer, sculptor, illustrator and Brazilian musician. His artwork aims to “bring some inner discomfort” and encourages the viewers to seek for a deeper meaning. His work consists of varied   techniques such as: oil painting, acrylic painting, ink, pens, digital art, 3d paintings, clay sculptures, resins, installations in 3d prints, wood, iron and corian.

I chose to complete a digital painting of a piece from his Expressionism series because I  like the way he layers the brighter colours underneath the darker shades of black and grey. I think that the colours emphasise the strong emotions which add to the dramatic character of his work. His work expresses the  passion, aggressiveness and creativity of the emotions in a unique artistic vision. This piece is almost haunting due to the juxtaposition of light interacting with vibrant tonal combinations.

When copying Maxiumo’s work I created different layers on Photoshop  for the different sections of the face. I first did the layer of the more vibrant colours such as the reds and blues before creating a new layer to add the darker colours. I used a variety of sizes and types for my brushes. For instance I used a bigger brush size for the background and on the face but I used a thinner pencil-like brush for the extra details on top.

Maximo’s  work has inspired me to explore different ways an individual expresses their emotions; I would portray this through the use of  contrasting colours, brush strokes and lines. Furthermore his focus is on revealing the “True Feeling” which I also want to incorporate in my own work.
