Study of Digital Artist Two:

Magdiel Lopez

Introduction

  • I have chosen to study the photographer Magdiel Lopez. I have chosen him because I am fascinated as to how he displays his image with a whimsical background and vibrant background, which effectively catch my eye.

Analysing 1 of their pieces of work:

  • The subject matter of the work to the right displays a women in front of a sunset esc background with a mixture of light blue and pink within the background and her sunglasses. Lopez effectively grabs the viewers attention through the subject within the foreground, with vibrant colours that are shown with stripes and a man in the mountains underneath them. The sunset behind the woman also creates a symmetrical look to the whole image. Lopez has paid particular attention to Compositional Rules in this work, as they have intentionally used contrast between the subject in the foreground, and the man in the mountains within the background to further demonstrate to the viewer how effective and grasping the image has become. The tone and the colour also help to show the contrast between a a subtle light blue background to the vibrant and luminous colours of the pink, purple and soft orange. Lopez has also used the Formal Elements of shape and form, within the sunset and parallel lines with the stripes. He has also used Negative space with the mountains in the background contrasting to the vibrant colours in the foreground, also using tone, light and focus which helps to not diminish the photo. The effect of these visual devices has definitely worked, as Lopez successfully and effectively creates an astounding image.

Mood:

  • I think the work feels calming and relaxing due to the smooth texture to the paint/ink helps to make me feel collective and peaceful. The artist has created this mood by merging the paint/ink together, which creates a blend of soft, vibrant and catchy colours. The colours used in the work are yellow, a light blue (turquoise) and a shade of light green in the foreground, while having a hypnotizing white background. Lund also uses high key photography to further present the vibrancy of the colours with the dull white seeping in. Due to the vibrancy of the yellow, turquoise and green, it effectively grabs the viewers attention, therefore conveying how it's successful in its purpose.

Technical analysis:

  • I think that this work was probably taken using a tripod to stabilize the camera while shooting the photos, which leads to a nice, steady image with no stability issues or unnecessary blur in the foreground. Lund has most likely used a range of purple and yellow lights to create the illumination within the stream of water, with either a blue filtered ring light or a blue backdrop to create the background. All of these components overall lead to a stunning image that effectively manages to catch the readers eye. The artist has used studio lighting with the purple and yellow hinted in the stream of water. it's difficult to tell the direction of the lights in this image but it's clear to see that there is a vibrant blue background which could perhaps be lit up. I believe that David Lund has used a sharpening tool of some kind (perhaps Topaz Sharpener AI) to gather more of a crisp within the photograph and that he has used HSL to bring out a more luminous and vibrant picture, that grasps the eye of the viewer. In this work the camera has been focused on the stream of water that has the light of the yellow and purple injected into it, while submerging itself in the blue abyss below, with the blue background being blurred out, with the focus on the stream. The artist has used a small aperture to create a shallow depth of field. Due to this, the viewers attention is subsequently drawn to the ominous stream located within the foreground, which is also in focus. I can tell that Lund has also used a fast shutter speed because the slower shutter speed helps to create less unneeded blur to the picture, helping to give a crisp image. It would have been best for them to use a small IS) like 50 to take this work because it reduces any grain in the image giving a balanced light to dark ratio.

Intent:

  • I think their work is about creating a sense of calmness within somebody who views his work.

Relate to your own work:
