Personal Response

Project Review:

For my Personal Response, I decided to pursue oil painting as it was the medium that interested me the most. At the start of the oil painting workshop, I had never used oil paint as a medium before, so it was very interesting seeing my knowledge and skills develop in such a short amount of time. To me, oil painting is the easiest medium to work with out of all the others I tried in the workshops. This is because of its texture, its slow drying and the vibrancy and layering that can be easily attained.

For my final Personal Response, I decided to focus on the theme of 'the passing of time' which was in correlation to our other projects as well (filmography). The idea behind my work is that there is a visibly young girl, wearing a daisy chain that is being placed onto her head by a distinctly older female hand. My intentions behind these specific details was to show the idea of the older generation ( specifically older women) passing on their youth, beauty and purity ( the daisies) to the new and younger generation of girls.

My artist inspirations were Cath Riley, in terms of the realism of the portrait, and Rogier Willems for the medium (oil paint).

I am most pleased with the hand and hair details, along with the daisy chain and the visible eye. However, going forward, I would improve my accuracy with colour matching and use warmer toned colours to show skin more realistically, especially on the face where I have made the girls tone slightly washed out/grey.
