Study of Digital Artist One
Jack Hicks
Introduction
-
I have chosen to study the photographer Jack Hicks
-
I have chosen them because I really like how they edit and how they use the colour gels, neon styles, lightening and tone of freelancing photography.
Analysing 1 of their pieces of work:

-
The subject matter of the work to the right depicts how colour gels and the lightening contrast with the photography. The viewers eye has led to the subject which is the model or person who is posing. Additionally the ring of colour is around the back of the persons/models head.
-
Any other information about the work that is important?
-
Hicks has paid particular attention to Compositional Rules in this work, as they have intentionally used framing of the neon pink circle shaped frame in the background of the subject. He also uses contrast between subject and background and this is shown in the relationship between the bright pink colour and the the models fit of the bright red drees. He also uses repetition of gel lighting and colour lighting to make the photos pop out more to the viewer and make it more living and bright.
-
Hicks has also used the Formal Elements of repetition of a specific gender which in this case are women and this shows his main focus is to give women more opportunities to become confident in different creative ways. He also uses shapes which in this photo is the vivid pink circle in the background making the subject and model more defined. another technique he uses is focus and colours. He makes it clear what the focus of his photos are which are the reflection of the colours into the subject which drags the viewers into a certain part of the photos or subjects.
-
The effect of these visual devices is that how fascinating the variation that you could create in a camera using gel lighting and colour lighting

Mood:
-
I think the work feels fascinating . The artist has created this mood by creates a mysterious, eerie and interesting vibe because of the dark colours in the photography.
-
The colours used in the work are a contrast with the clothes that the model of the photography wears. The photography is high key and the luminous tone that it projects with the dark secondary colours.
-
The people are giving a nonchalant and passive body language and expression. Alternatively they match the overall mood the photographer is trying to impersonate.

Technical analysis:

-
I think that this work was probably taken using filters and a light box or ring light with a white. The white background makes it easier for you to edit the background colour.
-
The artist has used studio lighting. If the light is in the direction of the model with a purple or pink light is also light onto the model .
-
They might have used Photoshop as it is a photography and it might be enhanced as it has a balanced show and contrast.
-
In this work the camera has been focused on the model which is the subject and its is in focus.
-
The artist has used a big aperture to create a Shallow Depth of Field. I can tell this because the background is blurry.
-
It gives a mysterious bright effect and focus on her face and the facial expression.
-
I can tell that Jack hicks has also used a fast Shutter Speed because they wanted to reduce motion blur.
-
It would have been best for them to use a big ISO like 400 to take this work because grain actually helps the very dark areas of the hair to have some detail.
Intent:
-
From looking at it, I think the work is about how to capture skill in one photography.
-
Researching hick's work, I have found that they made this work because of the high ISO but also the dark background.
-
I think their work is about fierce but powerful people.

Relate to your own work:
I'll be influenced to make my model seem fearless and strong but vulnerable and afraid at the same time. I'll replicate the poses and colours.
