Study of Digital Artist Two
Alana Dee Haynes
Introduction
-
I have chosen to study the photographer Alana Dee Haynes.
-
I have chosen them because I really like how they mix the patterns and drawings layer perfectly contrasting together.

Analysing 1 of their pieces of work:

-
The subject matter of the work to the right depicts shows how her love for nature is described, she uses nature as her big inspirations.
-
Any other information about the work that is important?
-
Alana dee Haynes has paid particular attention to Compositional Rules in this work, as they have intentionally used Leadings Lines (perspective lines that lead to the focal point), Framing (where the subject is framed by a window or object), Central Eye Dominant (a person’s eye is in the middle of the photography), Repetition and Pattern
-
Dee Haynes has also used the Formal Elements of [Repetition (repeated patterns), Shape and Form (strong shapes in the photo), Lines, Tone of black and white (strong contrast)
-
The effect of these visual devices is calming but mysterious.

Mood:
-
I think the work feels calm, spooky but exciting. The artist has created this mood by only using two colours black and white.
-
The colours used in the work are lacked of them in the work. High Key analogous (gradient), there is one pop of colour that really stands out, and the black lines and pattern stand out to the white background.
-
The people are looking at the camera and not smiling like they have no emotions .

Technical analysis:

-
I think that this work was probably taken using filters and a projector. The black and white filter but the projector is to project the cultural art and drawings of the patterns.
-
The artist has used no type of lighting. [Are they lit from a specific direction? Does the light have a colour to it, if so why have they chosen to do this? What are the shadows created like (is it hard light or soft light)?] It's lighter tone on the model but not the background and the light has a black and white colour light however it doesn't have any shadows.
-
Do you think the work has been edited in Photoshop/Premier Pro? If so, how have they edited it and why? [Most photos have probably been enhanced, at least]. [Films may be sped up, slowed down, work in time with the music, cut up, double exposed, text added etc) they have edited on photoshop to make it a black and white effect giving a 90s vibe and theme and to draw on the photography.
-
In this work the camera has been focused on the person and the details of the art.
-
The artist has used a medium aperture to create a Medium Depth of Field. I can tell this because it doesn't focus on one specific thing.
-
It gives a eerie but mysterious vibe and the viewers eye is drawn to the drawings and patterns.
-
Alana dee Haynes has used a fast Shutter Speed because they wanted to reduce motion blur.
-
It would have been best for them to use a small ISO like [400] to take this work because it's very dark.

Intent:
-
From looking at it, I think the work is about how the artist feels like black and white.
-
Researching Dee Hayne’s work, I have found that they made this work because she loves religion and cultural art
-
I think their work is about patterns and arts that you can connect with nature.

Relate to your own work:
-
How will you be influenced by this artist’s work when planning and taking your own photos? What about their work are you going to try and replicate in your own? I will have patterns and drawings on top or the background of my photography.
