Study of Digital Artist One

Christian Hopkins

Introduction

  • I have chosen to study the photographer Christian Hopkins

  • I have chosen them because I love the way they capture emotion through there photos and I feel like I can portray it really well.

Analysing 1 of their pieces of work:

  • The subject matter of the work to the right is focused on depression and what it feels like through  photography

  • Hopkins has paid particular attention to Compositional Rules in this work, as they have intentionally used Tone and Contrast

  • The effect of using these gives the photo a more sombre and sad feeling

Mood:

  • I think the work feels melancholy and gloomy. The artist has created this mood by showing his subject in a position which is associated with loneliness and helplessness

  • The colours used in the work are very unsaturated, mimicking a grey and gloomy day which adds to the feeling of the picture by making you associate it with grey and gloomy days

  • The colour choices makes the viewer feel sad for the person and even a little for themselves

  • The people in the photo show desperation as if they are almost leaching of the main subject. This is shown by their body language as they are reaching for the main subject.

Technical analysis:

  • I think that this work was probably taken using studio lighting, a backdrop and possibly a tripod. They have done this so that the subject is well lit, there is a clean back drop with nothing distracting from the subject and to get a steady shot

  • The artist has used studio/. The direction of the light is coming from the subject's front

  •

  • The shadows in the work are sharp/soft so they have/have not used a filter to create hard light.

  • The work has been edited in Photoshop to make it took darker and probably add a vignette

  • In this work the camera has been focused on the subject in the middle

  • The artist has used a big/small/medium aperture to create a Shallow/Long/Medium Depth of Field. I can tell this because...

  • I can tell that [artist's surname] has also used a fast/slow/medium Shutter Speed because... (e.g. slow to get light trails on film, or fast because they wanted to reduce motion blur]

  • It would have been best for them to use a big/small/medium ISO like [example number] to take this work because [it creates noise/grain, it's very bright/it's very dark/the light to dark ratio is balanced].

Intent:

  • From first looking at it, I thought the work was about…

  • When researching [surname]’s work, I have found that they made this work because…

Relate to your own work:

  • How will you be influenced by this artist’s work when planning and taking your own photos?

  • What about their work are you going to try and replicate in your own?
