Study of Digital Artist Two

Christian Sampson

Introduction

  • I have chosen to study the photographer Christian Sampson

  • I have chosen them because i think that their work very well portrays the theme I have chosen.

Analysing 1 of their pieces of work:

  • The subject matter of the work to the right is to portray different mental illnesses e.g depression and anxiety. This is shown through the people shown in a visual representation of how these conditions feel.

  • has paid particular attention to Compositional Rules in this work, as they have intentionally used Leading Lines, Contrast

  • The effect of using this/these is...

  • [Surname of artist] has also used the Formal Elements of [Repetition, Shape, Form, Negative Space, Balance, Focus, Texture, Lines, Colour, Tone or Light.

  • The effect of using this/these is...

Mood:

  • I think the work feels ____ (e.g. calm, spooky, exciting). The artist has created this mood by... [what makes it feel like that?]

  • The colours used in the work are [Describe the colours (or lack of them) in the work. Are they contrasting (opposite on the colour wheel) or analogous (a gradient), are they High Key/Low Key, is there one overarching colour or one pop of colour that really stands out, etc]

  • What effect do these colour choices have on the person looking at the work?

  • The people [if there are any] are… [Describe any body language and expression, do they match the overall mood of the piece or are they contrasting?]

Technical analysis:

  • I think that this work was probably taken using… [a tripod, macro lens, filters, lighting, props, etc] because... [why have they used this].

  • The artist has used studio/natural lighting. The direction of the light is coming from the subject's [left, right, top, front, bottom etc].

  • Has the artist used coloured gels, if so why?

  • The shadows in the work are sharp/soft so they have/have not used a filter to create soft/hard light.

  • The work has been edited in Photoshop/Premier Pro to create... [what have they done to edit it and why? Most photos have probably been enhanced, at least. Films may be sped up, slowed down, made in time with the music, cut up, double exposed, text added etc]

  • In this work the camera has been focused on... [describe the focal point (what's in focus/not blurry) of the photo]

  • The artist has used a big/small/medium aperture to create a Shallow/Long/Medium Depth of Field. I can tell this because...

  • I can tell that [artist's surname] has also used a fast/slow/medium Shutter Speed because... (e.g. slow to get light trails on film, or fast because they wanted to reduce motion blur]

  • It would have been best for them to use a big/small/medium ISO like [example number] to take this work because [it creates noise/grain, it's very bright/it's very dark/the light to dark ratio is balanced].

Intent:

  • From first looking at it, I thought the work was about…

  • When researching [surname]’s work, I have found that they made this work because…

Relate to your own work:

  • How will you be influenced by this artist’s work when planning and taking your own photos?

  • What about their work are you going to try and replicate in your own?
